On Monday, August 5, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan voiced objections in the Rajya Sabha when Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed her as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’. The actor-politician criticized this as a ‘new drama’ in Parliament, opposing the practice of linking women’s identities to their husbands’ names.
In a video shared by ANI, Jaya Bachchan is seen protesting when Chairman Dhankhar referred to her using her husband Amitabh Bachchan’s name. “Sir, I hope you know the meaning of Amitabh. I mean, I am proud of the association with my marriage and my husband, but I am just saying that I am very happy and proud of my husband’s achievements,” she stated. She further labeled the incident as a ‘drama’, adding, “Ye drama aap logon ne naya shuru kiya hai, pehle nahi tha (This is a new drama initiated by you all. It was not like this before).”
Chairman Dhankhar responded by mentioning the procedural norms tied to election certificates, explaining that the name used in official proceedings is the one listed on the election certificate, and there are provisions for changing it if desired. The veteran actress then questioned why Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had not included his wife’s name after his own. In response, the unmarried Khattar humorously replied, “As for my wife’s name in front of mine… not in this birth; for this, you will have to wait until the next birth.”
On the professional front, Jaya Bachchan’s recent appearance was in the film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’.
