Actor Demi Moore recently opened up about her role in the upcoming horror film The Substance and shared a behind-the-scenes look at her character’s intense transformation. In a recent post on her Instagram, Moore shared unsettling images of her character, wishing her followers a “Happy Halloween.” In the photos, she appears almost unrecognizable, sporting a haunting look created with extensive makeup. Her caption read, “Spoiler alert… Been holding onto these gems from @trythesubstance and today feels like an appropriate day to share them. Happy Halloween from Elisabeth Sparkle.”
Directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, The Substance pairs Moore with co-star Margaret Qualley and explores deep themes of body image, societal pressures on women, and the process of aging. Moore’s character, Elisabeth, is portrayed as a woman who becomes desperate to reclaim her youth, resorting to a black-market drug to create a younger version of herself. The movie, according to Fargeat, is a fictional reflection of issues that resonate strongly in the real world.
In a recent interview, Moore discussed the challenges of portraying Elisabeth, explaining that the role required more emotional preparation than physical. “It was about being less in shape in a certain sense as opposed to like the prep that went into it first and foremost was really emotional and internal,” she explained, highlighting the character’s underlying despair, fear, and self-loathing.
The Substance recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and previously won the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival in May, further cementing its acclaim in the horror genre.
