In a recent interview on Rajshri Unplugged, Yashpal Sharma, who portrayed the character of Lakha in Aamir Khan’s iconic film ‘Lagaan,’ shared insights into his role and expressed a preference for his character over Aamir’s lead role. Sharma revealed his excitement upon securing the role, considering Lakha’s character to be the best in the film due to its diverse emotional range, encompassing negativity, positivity, love, and jealousy.
Recalling the audition process at Aamir Khan’s Mumbai residence, Yashpal Sharma disclosed that he received a text confirming his selection for the role immediately after the audition. He emphasized the significance of starring alongside Aamir Khan and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.
Discussing the negotiation process for his compensation, Yashpal Sharma recounted his internal deliberations on quoting a fee for the film. Despite coming from a humble background, he aimed not to settle for less than one lakh but considered asking for Rs 50,000 due to concerns about losing the role. However, upon meeting Aamir Khan’s then-wife Reena at the office, she informed him about budget constraints, offering Rs 1.5 lakh to everyone. Yashpal Sharma, aiming higher, proposed Rs 2 lakh, which Reena agreed to, leading to the contract signing. Reflecting on the moment, Sharma pondered whether asking for a higher sum, such as Rs 5-10 lakh, would have been accepted.
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, ‘Lagaan’ is a period drama set in the pre-Independence era, portraying a small village grappling with drought and oppressive taxes. The film features Gracy Singh, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rajendra Gupta, Raghubir Yadav, Rajesh Vivek, Pradeep Rawat, and British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne in significant roles. Despite not winning the Oscar in 2002, ‘Lagaan’ continues to be cherished and revisited by audiences.
