Director Payal Kapadia’s film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ is set to compete at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The film, starring Kani Kusruthi and Divya Prabha in the lead roles, is vying for the prestigious Palme d’Or award, making it the first Indian film in three decades to enter the competition category. The last Indian film to achieve this feat was Shaji N Karun’s ‘Swaham’ in 1994.
Actress Divya Prabha expressed her gratitude in a heartfelt note shared on Instagram. She wrote, “A very big day for Indian Cinema. Super excited and super proud. Our film ‘All We Imagined As Light’, directed by #payalkapadia, has been selected for the 77th Cannes Film Festival 2024 in the prestigious Palme d’Or competition section. It’s the first Indian film to compete for the Palme d’Or award at Cannes Film Festival after around 30 years. (Malayalam filmmaker Shaji N Karun’s ‘Swaham’ (1994) was the last Indian film in Cannes main competition).”
She added, “’All We Imagined As Light’ will be presented alongside 19 other highly anticipated titles in the main competition section, including films from master directors Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Yorgos Lanthimos (“Kinds of Kindness”). ‘Oh Canada’ by Paul Schrader, ‘Bird’ by Andrea Arnold, ‘The Shrouds’ by David Cronenberg, and ‘Anora’ by Sean Baker are also part of the main Competition section. Grateful. Thank you all.”
The Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 14 to May 25.
