In a recent interview, Nawazuddin Siddiqui reflected on a pivotal moment during the filming of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ that transformed his career trajectory. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, known for his boundary-pushing cinema, the film marked a turning point for Siddiqui as he recalled a candid conversation with Kashyap on the sets.
Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Siddiqui revealed that he was initially inspired by Al Pacino’s intensity for his role and approached the first day of filming in a similar manner. However, Kashyap, during a private discussion later that evening in Varanasi, expressed his dismay over Siddiqui’s portrayal, questioning his approach and labeling it as overacting.
Recalling the incident, Siddiqui admitted feeling deeply embarrassed and recounted reshooting the entire day’s scenes to align with Kashyap’s direction. This incident not only refined Siddiqui’s acting approach but also marked the beginning of his journey as a leading actor in the industry.
Despite initial challenges, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ not only showcased Siddiqui’s talent but also brought attention to several other promising performers. Anurag Kashyap recently praised Siddiqui’s versatility, emphasizing the actor’s ability to transcend industry stereotypes.
In a separate interview with the Indian Express, Siddiqui acknowledged the supportive role Kashyap played during his own struggles with mental health, highlighting their mutual respect and professional admiration despite not being close friends.
