Renowned director Harald Zwart, recognized for his work on the 2010 reboot of ‘The Karate Kid,’ is set to helm the upcoming thriller ‘Betrayed,’ currently in development for the LA-based production company Onphaya, as per Deadline’s report.
The narrative unfolds around an archaeology professor who stumbles upon ancient biblical text fragments that challenge the very foundations of religious beliefs. As she grapples with malevolent factions determined to conceal the truth from history, her personal safety and longstanding ideals are pushed to the brink.
The screenplay, crafted by Australian writer-director Antony J. Bowman (known for ‘Paperback Hero’), draws inspiration from a narrative by Phillip Middleton and Bowman himself. Peta Johnson is slated to executive-produce alongside Rick Selvage for Onphaya.
Rick Selvage, an executive producer for the Amazon series ‘The Wheel of Time,’ expressed the importance of bringing ‘Betrayed’ to the screen given its timely and occasionally controversial themes, branding it an action thriller suited for the current era.
Director Harald Zwart commended Antony Bowman’s screenplay, emphasizing his fascination with individuals who courageously challenge deeply entrenched systems in their unwavering pursuit of truth, undeterred by any obstacles in their path.
Harald Zwart’s impressive filmography includes notable titles such as ‘One Night at McCool’s,’ the blockbuster ‘The Karate Kid,’ ‘The Mortal Instruments,’ and ‘The 12th Man,’ as reported by Deadline. Ming-Na Wen has also been announced as the latest addition to the cast of the upcoming ‘Karate Kid’ film.
