Renowned writer-director Rohit Jugraj makes his OTT debut with the gripping series “Chamak,” shedding light on the complex intersection of fame, politics, and crime within the Punjabi music industry. The musical thriller follows the journey of Kaala (Paramvir Singh Cheema), a young rapper returning to Punjab from Canada to uncover the mysterious death of legendary singer Taara Singh, who was fatally shot during a crowded performance.
In an exclusive interview with PTI, Jugraj emphasizes the need to unveil the roots, politics, and human emotions behind the Punjabi music industry, a genre enjoyed by audiences worldwide. “Chamak” aims to provide a deeper perspective into this vibrant world where the influence of Punjabi music extends far and wide, bringing with it both wealth and crime.
Jugraj, known for his directorial ventures like “Jatt James Bond” and “Sardaar Ji,” delves into the dark side of the industry, citing incidents of crime often fueled by insecurity among artists. Notable Punjabi artists such as Amar Singh Chamkila and Sidhu Moosewala, both victims of fatal attacks in the state, serve as examples of the industry’s darker underbelly.
The director draws inspiration from real-life events, infusing them into a fictional narrative centered around a father-son relationship. “Chamak” portrays the son’s realization that his father, a legendary singer, was murdered, intertwining this revelation with the contemporary Punjabi music scene.
The series, set to stream on SonyLIV from December 7, features cameo appearances by prominent figures in the Punjabi music industry, including Gippy Grewal, Mika Singh, Malkit Singh, MC Square, Afsana Khan, Asees Kaur, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kanwar Grewal, Shashwat Singh, and Harjot Kaur.
Jugraj reveals that he had approached Sidhu Moosewala for a guest appearance in “Chamak” and expresses gratitude for Moosewala’s generosity in agreeing to the cameo. Reflecting on the competitive spirit within the industry, Jugraj notes the series’ exploration of themes such as jealousy and insecurity, fueled by the immense talent within the Punjabi music scene.
