Disneyland is preparing to bring the enchanting world of Pandora to California with a new themed land inspired by James Cameron’s 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water. The announcement was made by Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, during the D23 Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase on Saturday.
The upcoming attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim will draw inspiration not only from Avatar: The Way of Water but also from future installments in the Avatar series. This new land will offer guests an opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes and thrilling adventures of Pandora, presenting a fresh experience compared to the existing Pandora-themed area at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, which is based on the original 2009 film.
Disney Imagineer Ali Rubin has unveiled concept art for the attraction, which promises an immersive journey through Pandora. Visitors will have the chance to discover the majestic natural wonders of the world and encounter its beauty and challenges. The new land is designed to capture the excitement and wonder of the Avatar universe, including the exploration of Pandora’s expansive seas.
This announcement follows James Cameron’s reveal of the title for the third Avatar film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, at the D23 event. Cameron, alongside stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, showcased new concept art featuring the fire Na’vi people, hinting at new cultures and environments in the upcoming film. Cameron also promised that the new movie would unveil more of Pandora than ever before, offering fans a unique and eagerly anticipated experience.
The Avatar franchise continues to influence global cinema significantly. The original film holds the record as the highest-grossing movie of all time with over $2.9 billion in earnings worldwide, while its 2022 sequel ranks third in box office history with $2.3 billion, behind Avengers: Endgame. The new Disneyland attraction aims to extend the magic of Pandora to a broader audience, enhancing the immersive experience for fans of the films.
