Warner Bros Discovery, the Hollywood studio, has granted permission for the creators of “Coyote vs Acme” to explore alternative distribution options after abruptly canceling the project, despite its completion. The surprising move, initially attributed to securing a tax write-off, has now been reversed. Director Dave Green has been authorized to pitch the live-action/animation hybrid film to various potential distributors, including Netflix, Apple, and Amazon.
Screenings are reportedly being arranged for Amazon, Apple, and Netflix, providing an opportunity for these streaming giants to acquire the movie, which concluded filming in 2022 with plans for a theatrical release. Budgeted at USD 70 million, “Coyote vs. Acme” features John Cena and Lana Condor in lead roles.
This marks the third instance in two years that Warner Bros has terminated a movie for tax-related reasons, with “Batgirl” and “Scoob! Holiday Haunt” being the previous casualties. Director Dave Green expressed disappointment with Warner Bros’ initial decision to cancel “Coyote vs Acme,” a project that spanned three years of production.
“Throughout the journey, we garnered support from test audiences who rewarded us with fantastic scores. I am immensely proud of the final product,” Green shared on social media at the time of the announcement.
