Freddie Prinze Jr. is expressing interest in reprising his role for the reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, revealing that efforts are underway to make it happen. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the reboot is scheduled to release on July 18, 2025. Prinze Jr. shared with Us Weekly that while no agreements are finalized, he is actively in discussions to return. “Nothing’s a lock until there’s ink on paper, until the contract’s signed, but I’m definitely talking to them,” he stated. “And if we can make everything work — and I know they wanna make everything work, I know I wanna make everything work — then we’ll try and make it work. But we gotta make sure everyone’s schedules fit.”
Prinze Jr. emphasized the importance of everyone being satisfied with the script, praising Robinson as a promising director. “I like Jen Robinson very much as a director and as a person. I think people like her are the future of this business,” he added. Sony Pictures is reportedly in discussions with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Prinze Jr. regarding their return. “I’m motivated, I know they’re motivated. I know both sides are trying to make it work. And hopefully we do,” Prinze Jr. said.
The reboot has assembled a cast including Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King in prominent roles. Robinson co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Lansky following an initial script by Leah McKendrick. The 1997 original film, directed by Jim Gillespie and written by Kevin Williamson, was loosely adapted from Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel. The original film featured Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki, and Bridgette Wilson and was followed by a sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, in 1998, and a third installment, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, in 2006, with a completely new cast. A television adaptation aired on Amazon’s Prime Video in 2021 but was canceled after one season.
