In a recent development, the Nadigar Sangam, also known as the South Indian Artists Association, which predominantly represents members from the Tamil cinema industry, has been in the spotlight following the passing of veteran actor Vijayakanth. Notably, Vijayakanth served as the President of Nadigar Sangam from 2000 to 2006, leaving an indelible mark on the association.
During his tenure, Vijayakanth played a pivotal role in revitalizing Nadigar Sangam, successfully steering it out of a staggering Rs 450 crore debt. His innovative ideas and strategic fundraising events contributed significantly to the association’s financial recovery. Beyond financial matters, Vijayakanth showcased his leadership prowess by fostering unity among Tamil cinema artists during various events.
What sets Vijayakanth’s legacy apart is not only the elimination of the association’s debt but also his foresight in leaving a substantial balance of Rs 1 crore in Nadigar Sangam’s account when he stepped down in 2006. This foresight ultimately proved instrumental in the sustained existence of Nadigar Sangam, with Sarathkumar taking over the leadership mantle from Vijayakanth.
In the wake of Vijayakanth’s demise due to health complications, numerous celebrities have paid tribute to the iconic actor. Notably, choreographer-director-actor Jaguar Thangam has put forth a suggestion to officially rename Nadigar Sangam after Vijayakanth, as a fitting tribute to his longstanding service to the association. Despite this proposal, no official decision has been announced as of yet.
Meanwhile, Nadigar Sangam has expressed its condolences over Vijayakanth’s passing, acknowledging the actor’s instrumental support to fellow actors, producers, and workers. A press note released on behalf of Nadigar Sangam also commended Vijayakanth’s efforts in the association’s evolution, underscoring his enduring impact on the Tamil cinema fraternity.
