In a recent announcement on Threads, renowned filmmaker James Gunn, who serves as the co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios, has confirmed that actor Nicholas Hoult will take on the iconic role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming film “Superman: Legacy.” Hoult, recognized for his roles in the ‘X-Men’ franchise, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ ‘The Favourite,’ and ‘The Great’ series, was personally congratulated by Gunn, who shared the news along with plans for creating a Lex Luthor portrayal that promises to be unique and unforgettable.
Gunn expressed his excitement, stating, “Yes, finally I can answer, Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor in #SupermanLegacy, and I couldn’t be happier.” The filmmaker revealed that he recently celebrated the casting decision with a dinner meeting with Hoult to discuss their vision for a Lex Luthor that will stand apart from previous portrayals.
Addressing the delay in the confirmation, Gunn explained, “‘But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?’ Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple of days ago, and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain.”
The character of Lex Luthor has been previously brought to life on the big screen by actors such as Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg. Hoult now steps into the role alongside previously announced cast members David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, who are set to play Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively, in the highly anticipated reboot based on the beloved DC character.
Joining the ensemble cast of “Superman: Legacy” are Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, and Sara Sampaio. The film is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
