In a recent turn of events, Mohanlal’s latest release, ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban,’ directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, is facing challenges at the box office. Despite an initial collection of Rs 5.65 crore in India on the first day, the film has experienced a noticeable decline over the weekend.
According to reports from Sacnilk, on Republic Day, Friday, the film witnessed a substantial drop of 57.52 percent, resulting in a meager box office figure of Rs 2.4 crore from India. The trend continued on Saturday, the third day, with the movie earning only Rs 1.64 crore, bringing the total net collection to approximately Rs 9.70 crore.
On Saturday, the overall occupancy rate for the Malayalam version stood at 21.03 percent. The morning shows reported 13.22 percent, afternoon shows had an occupancy of 19.73 percent, while the evening and night shows contributed 22.89 and 28.27 percent, respectively.
The global box office collection for the Mohanlal-starrer reached close to Rs 16.8 crore on the third day.
Despite being reportedly made on a budget exceeding Rs 60 crore, ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban’ is encountering challenges, particularly in its home state, Kerala, where its performance has been lackluster, contributing to the overall decline in subsequent days following the release.
Adding a twist to the narrative, Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has come forward to defend the film. Kashyap expressed his admiration for ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban,’ emphasizing that his positive perception contrasts with the criticism the film has faced due to preconceived notions.
