In a surprising turn of events, the highly-anticipated period drama, ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban,’ featuring the renowned actor Mohanlal and directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, concluded its theatrical run with an unexpected box office outcome.
Despite the massive pre-release hype and a substantial budget of approximately Rs. 60 crores, the film failed to meet the high expectations set by Malayalam cinema enthusiasts.
Released in January 2024, this marked the first collaboration between Mohanlal and Lijo Jose Pellissery. Unfortunately, the movie fell short of crossing the Rs. 30 crore milestone, making it one of the major commercial setbacks in Mohanlal’s illustrious career. The film’s final worldwide collections stand at Rs. 29.85 crores.
According to reports from OTT platforms, ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban’ struggled to surpass the Rs. 15 crore mark at the box office. The film earned Rs. 14.42 crores from its theatrical run in the state of Kerala. From other regions in India, the period drama managed to gather Rs. 2.30 crores. The overseas box office contributed Rs. 13.13 crores to the overall collection.
Hitting the big screens on January 25, ‘Malaikottai Vaaliban’ received mixed reviews from audiences. Despite gaining the right audiences after a few days of its initial release, it seems that it was not enough for the movie to achieve a break-even profit.
