In a recent interview, actress Mumtaz, who starred alongside Rajesh Khanna in several successful films, shared insights into the factors contributing to the actor’s decline. Known for their hit pairings and memorable songs, Khanna’s rise to fame as the first superstar of Hindi cinema is well-documented, but his downfall has also been a topic of discussion.
Mumtaz revealed that while stars are undeniably dependent on their audience’s love and support, there were other elements at play in Khanna’s life. She recounted observing influential producers and directors acting as ‘chamchas’ around Khanna, contributing to his downfall. Mumtaz described how Khanna’s girlfriend, Anju Mahendru, would host late-night gatherings, serving food and drinks until 3 AM, a scene she noted was also common at Shammi Kapoor’s home, where lavish entertaining was frequent.
Mumtaz expressed strong disapproval of the practice of ‘chamchagiri,’ where producers and filmmakers excessively flatter actors. She commended director Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his approach, which she feels avoids such practices. According to Mumtaz, Bhansali respects his actors and maintains professional boundaries without indulging in unnecessary flattery.
Additionally, Mumtaz praised singer Mohammad Rafi for his discipline, humility, and devout nature, highlighting his admirable qualities in contrast to the more superficial aspects of the film industry.
