The 70th National Film Awards have been announced today, celebrating the best in Indian cinema across various languages and categories. Tamil cinema emerged as a major winner, with Mani Ratnam’s directorial ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ dominating the awards. The epic historical drama secured four prestigious accolades, including Best Tamil Film, Best Sound Design, Best Cinematography for Ravi Varman, and Best Music Director for AR Rahman.
In addition to ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1,’ Dhanush’s ‘Thiruchitrambalam’ also made a significant impact, winning two awards. Nithya Menen was honored with the Best Actress award, while Jani received recognition for Best Choreography. Among the numerous films submitted by the regional panel, four Tamil films were selected by the central panel of the National Film Awards committee, with ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ and ‘Thiruchitrambalam’ standing out in the final stage.
Rishab Shetty’s remarkable performance in ‘Kantara’ earned him the Best Actor award. The date for the awards ceremony is expected to be announced soon, and fans have been expressing their appreciation for the winners while also voicing disappointment over some anticipated Tamil stars who did not make it to the final categories. Despite this, Kollywood has reason to celebrate, as Tamil films triumphed in six categories.
Other films from the South that garnered recognition at the 70th National Film Awards include ‘Kartikeya 2,’ ‘KGF Chapter 2,’ ‘Daivam Manushya,’ and ‘Aattam.’
