Focus Features and Carnival Films have announced the commencement of production for “Downton Abbey 3,” the latest installment in the beloved franchise inspired by Julian Fellowes’ hit TV series. Returning to direct is Simon Curtis, who previously helmed the 2022 sequel, “Downton Abbey: A New Era.”
The ensemble cast will see the return of mainstays such as Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, and Jim Carter, among others. Additionally, Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti is set to reprise his role as Harold Levinson, brother to Cora Crawley (played by Elizabeth McGovern). Joining the franchise are new faces including Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. Dominic West will also return as Guy Dexter from the second movie.
While plot details remain under wraps, the screenplay for “Downton Abbey 3” is penned by creator Julian Fellowes. Gareth Neame, Fellowes, and Liz Trubridge are on board as producers.
Originally debuting on ITV in 2011, “Downton Abbey” quickly became a global sensation, spanning six seasons and two successful movies. The first two films, released in 2019 and 2022, collectively grossed over $287 million worldwide.
“Downton Abbey 3” is produced by Carnival Films and distributed by Focus Features and Universal Pictures International, with Carnival Films being part of NBCUniversal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group.
The official announcement of production was made via social media by Focus Features and Carnival Films on Monday.
