Bengali actress and politician Mimi Chakraborty has formally resigned from her position as a Member of Parliament for the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). The announcement was made as she submitted her resignation to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The acceptance of Mimi’s resignation remained uncertain at the time of the announcement.
Several weeks after Mimi’s departure, Mamata Banerjee revealed the candidate list for the upcoming Lok Sabha 2024 election at the Brigade Ground march on Sunday. Notably, Saayoni Ghosh has been chosen to contest from Jadavpur in place of Mimi.
Saayoni Ghosh, a former Bengali actress who transitioned into politics like Mimi, assumed the role of the president of the youth wing of a major political party in June 2021, succeeding Abhishek Banerjee. Despite expressing dissent against the Chief Minister and the party’s policies on multiple occasions, Ghosh joined the party just before the 2021 Legislative Assembly elections and contested in the election herself, though she faced defeat. Undeterred by the setback, she continued to actively engage with her party colleagues, eventually earning the position of the youth wing president.
After three years, Saayoni Ghosh, renowned for her role in ‘Aparajito,’ is gearing up for her second election this year, showcasing resilience and dedication to her political journey.
Commencing her acting career with the telefilm “Ichhe Dana,” Ghosh made her big-screen debut in 2010 with “Notobor Notout.” Over the years, she has featured in films such as “Alik Sukh,” “Golpo Holwo Shotti,” “Ekla Cholo,” “Rajkahini,” “Byomkesh O Chiriyakhana,” “Dracula Sir,” and “Aparajito.” Notably, Ghosh shared the screen with Mimi Chakraborty and Anirban Bhattacharya in “Dracula Sir.”
