In a recent announcement, it has been confirmed that a sequel to the 2014 3DCG anime film, Expelled from Paradise, is currently in development. Titled “Liberation from Paradise,” the movie is still in its early production stages, but a teaser video and key visual have already been unveiled.
The revealed imagery prominently features the protagonist, Gabriel, navigating a challenging snowscape with unwavering determination. Gabriel, much like Expelled from Paradise’s main character, Angela Balzac, serves as a DEVA agent and is seen donning the distinctive leotard-like costume associated with the role. The character design for Gabriel was first showcased in a teaser visual in November 2022, coinciding with the project’s announcement by Toei Animation.
Director Seiji Mizushima, recognized for his work on projects like Beatless and D4DJ First Mix, had disclosed the collaboration on this new project in July 2021. The team includes Gen Urobuchi from Nitroplus, the scriptwriter for Expelled from Paradise and the composer for the Puella Magi Madoka Magica series, along with illustrator Masatsugu Saitou, who served as the character designer for Expelled from Paradise and co-main designer for Eureka: Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution.
Insights from the Liberation from Paradise: Kokoro no Resonance presentation at the Virtual Anime Fes. event revealed that discussions about a sequel to Expelled from Paradise began “about five or six years ago.”
Expelled from Paradise is set in a world where the majority of humanity has transitioned into a digitized existence within a virtual society called DEVA. The narrative takes a turn when a hacker infiltrates this supposed utopia, leading to Angela being dispatched to the desolate Earth with a physical body to identify and apprehend the culprit.
