Popular actress Shraddha Srinath has called for stronger systems to support women facing sexual harassment in the film industry. Speaking at the India Today Mind Rocks Youth Summit 2024, Shraddha addressed the Hema Committee report, which uncovered numerous cases of discrimination and abuse against women in the Malayalam film industry, creating ripples across the industry.
Shraddha acknowledged that although she has not personally experienced harassment in the film industry, she recognizes the urgent need for protective measures. The actress shared that while she feels safe in her professional environment, she has often felt uneasy outside of it, particularly when returning home from social events or being aware of her surroundings. “I’ve felt this way since I was eight. I’ve been lucky not to face anything in the industry, but that doesn’t mean others aren’t struggling,” Shraddha said.
Emphasizing the need for a structured body to address systemic abuse, Shraddha pointed out the importance of providing victims with a safe space to share their experiences. She also highlighted the difficulties faced by women working on film sets, particularly the lack of proper sanitation facilities. “If you are going through something, you don’t know whom to speak to. And sometimes, by the time you speak, it’s too late. We need a structured body that looks into this,” she added.
The actress noted that even small changes, such as ensuring proper toilet facilities for workers like saree drapers and hairstylists, could have a significant impact on improving conditions for women.
Shraddha Srinath recently appeared as the female lead in the Mohanlal-starrer Malayalam action film ‘Aaraattu,’ directed by B. Unnikrishnan.
