Hollywood star Simu Liu has confirmed that a sequel to his 2021 Marvel superhero film “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” is “definitely happening.” Liu made history as the first actor of Asian origin to portray a Marvel superhero in the hit film, which also starred Hong Kong legend Tony Leung as his father and actor Awkwafina as his friend.
Fans have expressed concern about the sequel’s future due to the lack of updates from Marvel, despite the success of the original film. However, Liu has reassured them that the follow-up is in the works. “A lot of it is above my pay grade, but it’s definitely happening. I’m just very excited to work on it, and it’s going to be amazing. I really can’t say anything beyond that,” Liu shared in an interview with PTI.
The Canadian actor, now 35, is currently starring in the film “Jackpot!,” which reunites him with his “Shang-Chi…” co-star Awkwafina. Directed by Paul Feig, known for “Bridesmaids” and “Last Christmas,” “Jackpot!” is set in a near-future California and follows Awkwafina’s character Katie, a struggling actor who wins the lottery. The twist is that a rule allows anyone who kills her to claim the winnings. Liu plays Louis Lewis, who befriends Katie and John Cena’s character Noel, with the intention of killing them and taking the money.
Reflecting on his own jackpot moment, Liu said it was when he received the call from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige offering him the role of Shang-Chi. “Probably the main one that I could think of is getting the call from Kevin Feige—God, it was like five years ago now—that I was going to play Shang-Chi. If you talk about one moment and one decision that completely changes the trajectory of an entire career, an entire life, not only my life but the lives of my friends, my family, I think that call is like winning the lottery 10 times over,” Liu said.
