Sony and Legendary announced on Wednesday that their live-action “Street Fighter” film, inspired by Capcom’s iconic video game series, is slated for theatrical release on March 20, 2026.
This announcement follows the recent exit of directors Danny and Michael Philippou, the Australian twins recognized for their work on A24’s horror hit “Talk to Me.” With the Philippou brothers stepping down, the hunt for a new director for this highly anticipated project is underway, although plot details remain under wraps.
Sony will distribute the film, which is being co-developed and produced alongside Capcom. Legendary Pictures secured the live-action film and TV rights to the “Street Fighter” franchise in April 2023. The game series, renowned for its groundbreaking mechanics and global martial arts tournament storyline, has sold over 49 million units since its debut in 1987. “Street Fighter II,” released in 1991, was particularly influential, introducing combo attacks and special moves that revolutionized both arcade and home console gaming. The latest installment, “Street Fighter 6,” launched in June 2023 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, and PC via Steam.
The “Street Fighter” franchise has previously inspired films, including 1994’s “Street Fighter,” starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and 2009’s “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.”
Looking ahead to March 2026, “Street Fighter” will be competing with several other major releases. These include Warner Bros’ adaptation of “The Cat in the Hat” on March 6, Mike Flanagan’s new take on “The Exorcist” on March 13, and Universal’s sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” on April 3.
