In a strategic release on the auspicious occasion of Ayudha Pooja, Vijay-starrer ‘Leo’ roared into theaters, making a sensational debut at the box office. Despite facing a spectrum of reviews, the action-packed film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj sustained robust occupancy throughout its theatrical run. ‘Leo’ bid farewell to cinema halls after an impressive 60-day stint.
Having initially stormed past the 600-crore milestone, ‘Leo’ encountered a noticeable deceleration, particularly in its final days, as newer action dramas diverted screens. Nevertheless, as the crowning achievement of Tamil cinema in 2023, the film concluded its triumphant journey with a staggering final collection of Rs 623 crore, outshining Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’ (Rs 607 crore) and securing its position as the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year.
Within Tamil Nadu, ‘Leo’ etched its name in history, grossing nearly Rs 223 crore to become the highest-grossing film of all time in the state. The film also emerged as the top-grossing Tamil production in both Kerala and Karnataka. Overseas, ‘Leo’ amassed an impressive Rs 240 crore.
Under the directorial helm of Lokesh Kanagaraj, ‘Leo’ showcased Vijay in a dual avatar, delivering one of the actor’s career-best performances. The ensemble cast, including Trisha, Sanjay Dutt, Gautham Menon, Arjun Sarja, Mysskin, Mathew Thomas, Priya Anand, Sandy, and Mansoor Ali Khan, played pivotal roles, with Anirudh Ravichander providing the electrifying musical score.
Simultaneously released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi languages, ‘Leo’ showcased Vijay’s pan-Indian appeal, contributing to its monumental success.
