Vishwak Sen’s last film, Gangs of Godavari, ended as a big flop at the box office. He is now ready with his new film Mechanic Rocky, which has Meenakshi Chaudhary, Shraddha Srinath, and Sunil in key roles. Directed by Ravi Teja Mullapudi, the film has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Story :
Rocky (Vishwak Sen) is a mechanic who owns a driving school with his father (Naresh). One fine day, a local don (Sunil) attacks him and tries to seize his land. Rocky begs the don to give him time to arrange ₹40 lakhs to save his driving school. During this time, his father passes away, and Rocky learns that his father has an insurance policy worth ₹2 crores. Elated, he approaches a bank officer, Maya (Shraddha Srinath), who informs him that the nominee in his father’s will is not Rocky but someone else. Who is this new person? What is the real story behind the insurance policy? Where does Meenakshi Chaudhary feature in this setup? And did Rocky save his father’s precious shed? These form the crux of the film.
Plus Points :
Vishwak Sen is known for selecting good stories, and he has done the same with Mechanic Rocky. Though the trailer appears routine and commercial, the actual conflict point is revealed in the second half and is presented entertainingly. Credit should go to director Ravi Teja for narrating the second half in a tightly packed and engaging style. The thrills showcased in the latter half are impressive and keep you hooked until the end.
For a change, Meenakshi Chaudhary gets a solid role and excels in the film. Her performance as the girl next door is excellent and adds value to the first half. Shraddha Srinath surprises with her performance and is one of the major highlights of Mechanic Rocky. Her solid transformation showcases her talent, and her casting is spot on.
MTV Roadies fame Raghu is effective as the bad cop and makes his presence felt. Harshvardhan is also neat in his role, while Viva Harsh delivers an okay performance. Naresh has some good scenes that generate decent comedy in the first half.
Last but not least, Vishwak Sen is top-notch in the film and perfectly fits mass roles like this. His mass image suits the character immensely, and he delivers an impressive performance. His portrayal during the tense and helpless moments is particularly well done, further cementing his talent as a young star.
Minus Points :
One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is its runtime. Mechanic Rocky runs for 156 minutes, which makes things challenging, especially in the first half. The makers need to cut close to ten minutes and remove a song immediately. The first half starts on a very dull note as the proceedings lack energy, and the comedy feels stale. The love story and flashbacks are narrated in a lackluster manner, with things only picking up in the last twenty minutes of the first half.
The relationship between the heroine’s brother and Vishwak Sen is depicted as close, but there is no real emotional depth between them. The so-called bonding scenes fail to make an impact. Director Ravi Teja could have omitted a few scenes in the first half.
The entry of Sunil, Naresh’s comedy, and the flashback scenes featuring Meenakshi lack the required punch. Had the screenplay been handled more effectively, the overall output would have been significantly better.
Technical Aspects :
Jakes Bejoy has composed the music, and his background score (BGM) is excellent. The songs are nice, but they act as speedbreakers. One wedding song, in particular, is poorly executed and could have been removed to make things more engaging. The dialogues are well-written, and the production values are top-notch. A special mention goes to Manojh Reddy, whose cinematography, especially in the action sequences and chase scenes, is outstanding. The drone shots showcasing modern Hyderabad are particularly impressive. As mentioned earlier, the editing in the first half is subpar.
Coming to director Ravi Teja Mullapudi, he makes a decent debut. He has tackled a relevant topic of cyber scams and delivered a decent thriller. The way he handles the second half is commendable, as he hardly puts a foot wrong and wraps up the film in an entertaining manner. The logic in the storyline is well-maintained, and the execution is impressive. However, had he made the first half crisper and avoided unnecessary commercial elements, the overall output would have been much better.
Verdict :
On the whole, Mechanic Rocky is a decent thriller that has a gripping second half. The twists and turns keep you engaged till the end. But to enjoy this part, you need to ignore the dull first half. If you manage to do this, the Vishwak Sen film ends up being a decent watch this weekend.
