Wayfarer Studios is set to adapt Sanford “Sandy” D. Greenberg’s 2020 inspirational memoir, Hello Darkness My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness Into an Extraordinary Vision for Life, for the big screen. The project reunites the studio with Tony Spiridakis, who will adapt and executive produce the film. Spiridakis, known for his work on the indie feature Ezra starring Robert De Niro and Bobby Cannavale, will bring Greenberg’s story to life.
The announcement comes as Wayfarer Studios prepares to release the Justin Baldoni-Blake Lively romance drama, It Ends With Us, based on Colleen Hoover’s novel, on August 9 via Sony.
Greenberg’s memoir chronicles his early life in an impoverished Jewish household in Buffalo, NY, his transformative years at Columbia University, and the profound challenges he faced, including the loss of his sight due to misdiagnosed glaucoma. During his time at Columbia, Greenberg developed a deep friendship with Art Garfunkel, who played a pivotal role in his life following his blindness. With Garfunkel’s support, Greenberg returned to school and achieved remarkable success, a journey that the film will vividly portray. The story also touches on Greenberg’s contribution to the iconic song “Sound of Silence,” recorded by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, highlighting the unwavering friendship and support between Garfunkel and Greenberg.
Tony Spiridakis expressed his admiration for Greenberg’s resilience and the enduring friendships that helped him overcome his challenges. Spiridakis aims to capture the essence of how Greenberg, Garfunkel, and Sue, Greenberg’s girlfriend and now wife, navigated the trials they faced together.
Sanford Greenberg expressed his excitement for the film adaptation, emphasizing the importance of conveying the message that challenges can be overcome with determination, courage, and the support of loved ones. He hopes the film will inspire viewers to understand that adversity can lead to a fulfilling and impactful life.
Andrew Calof, President of Production & Development at Wayfarer Studios, highlighted the significance of Greenberg’s story of perseverance and resilience, stating that it embodies the spirit of tikkun olam—repairing and healing the world—which is particularly relevant today.
The film will be executive produced by Steve Sarowitz and Jamey Heath of Wayfarer Studios, along with Greenberg and Jeff McCarter. Justin Baldoni and Andrew Calof will produce for Wayfarer Studios, with Angela Cardon overseeing the project on behalf of the studio. Imene Meziane from Wayfarer Studios negotiated the deal.
Greenberg is represented by CAA and Steve Burkow at Ziffren Brittenham LLP. Tony Spiridakis is represented by The Gotham Group and Schreck, Rose, Dapello, Adams, Berlin & Dunham. Wayfarer Studios is represented by WME.
