Disney recently honored 14 artists with the prestigious “Legends” status, recognizing their significant impact on the company’s legacy. This year’s honorees include Harrison Ford, Angela Bassett, and Miley Cyrus, among others who have greatly influenced Disney’s world. The celebration took place during a ceremony at The Honda Center in Anaheim, California, as part of the D23 fan convention. The event was hosted by Ryan Seacrest and will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting Monday.
Harrison Ford, who was the first to accept his award, expressed his gratitude and admiration for his collaborators, acknowledging their crucial role in his career. He also thanked Disney CEO Bob Iger for his support and friendship. Ford, known for his roles in “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars,” will soon make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Captain America: Brave New World.” He will also have his signature and handprints re-done on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Miley Cyrus, the youngest recipient of the Legends honor, became emotional as she accepted her award. Following a performance of “The Best of Both Worlds” by country singer Lainey Wilson, Cyrus shared her thoughts on bravery and persistence, encouraging others to embrace fear and continue striving for their goals. Since her breakout role in “Hannah Montana,” Cyrus has enjoyed a successful music career, recently winning her first Grammy Award.
Angela Bassett, who starred in “Black Panther” and its sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” was honored by Ryan Coogler, the film’s director. Bassett also stars in ABC’s “9-1-1” and expressed deep appreciation for the fans who have supported her throughout her career.
Jamie Lee Curtis received her award from Lindsay Lohan and Jodie Foster. Curtis, known for her roles in various Disney films, including “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and “You Again,” highlighted the importance of creativity and connection in the arts. She will soon reprise her role in the upcoming sequel to “Freaky Friday.”
John Williams, renowned for his iconic film scores, was honored by Ford. Williams’ contributions to films like “Indiana Jones,” “Star Wars,” “Jurassic Park,” and “Jaws” were celebrated with a medley performed by the Pacific Symphony.
James Cameron, celebrated for his work on films such as “Titanic” and “Avatar,” expressed his joy at being recognized alongside such creative peers. His work has significantly influenced the film industry and Disney’s filmography.
Kelly Ripa, who has worked with Disney for over 30 years, was introduced by her former co-host Ryan Seacrest. Ripa, currently hosting “Live with Kelly and Mark,” praised Disney for its long-term support and employment opportunities.
Danny DeVito presented an award to James L. Brooks, praising him as a “genius” for his contributions to shows like “The Simpsons” and “Mary Tyler Moore Show.”
In addition to these celebrated figures, Disney also honored six behind-the-scenes creatives. Colleen Atwood, Mark Henn, Steve Ditko, Frank Oz, Martha Blanding, and Joe Rohde were recognized for their influential work in film, animation, and Disney experiences.
The Disney Legends program, which began in 1987, has honored over 300 individuals, including notable figures like Elton John, Steve Jobs, Betty White, Dick Van Dyke, Robert Downey Jr., and Whoopi Goldberg.
