Recently, Vairamuthu faced renewed scrutiny on social media following his comments regarding the Hema Committee report during a media interaction. The lyricist, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women, described the report as “very important” and called for similar committees to be established across various fields in the country. His statements sparked outrage, with many accusing him of hypocrisy.
Vairamuthu emphasized the need for security for women, stating, “I believe that the Hema Committee should be set up in all fields in all states. Women are seeking security not just in cinema but in all fields. Women are being exploited and subjected to sexual abuse. For them to be relieved of all this, the concepts of womanhood and manhood — which, I believe, lead to differences — should be completely removed. Men and women are equal. One gender abusing another shows that one gender is weak. Women are not a weak gender.”
Among those who criticized Vairamuthu was singer Chinmayi Sripaada, who accused him of sexual misconduct during the #MeTooIndia movement in 2018. She referred to him as the “Tamilian Harvey Weinstein” and expressed her frustration on social media, saying, “Anywhere else this Tamilian Harvey Weinstein would be investigated at the very least. Almost 20 women have named Vairamuthu, yet the shamelessness to platform him requires a special wiring. My deepest, most sincere prayer and wish is that the systems, societies and people that protect sex offenders have a painful loooooong drawn out end.”
