In a galaxy far, far away, the iconic duo from the ‘Star Wars’ universe, The Mandalorian and the beloved Grogu, are set to grace the big screen in an upcoming film titled ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu.’ Directed by Jon Favreau, the creative mind behind ‘The Mandalorian’ series, filming is poised to kick off later this year, marking a significant milestone as the first Star Wars movie to enter production since the 2019 release of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.’
Contrary to earlier speculations of a Daisy Ridley-led project taking the lead, it appears that the journey to hyperspace will commence with ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu.’ Favreau expressed his excitement about the project, citing his enjoyment in telling stories created by the legendary George Lucas and his eagerness to bring the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the cinematic experience of 70MM.
‘The Mandalorian’ series, which premiered in November 2019, soared to immense popularity, with Baby Yoda (Grogu) becoming a cultural phenomenon. Pedro Pascal leads the series as Din Djarin, The Mandalorian, and the third season, which premiered last year, has spawned various spin-offs, including ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ and ‘Ahsoka,’ with the latter already confirmed for a second season.
Despite Lucasfilm not providing a specific release date for the movie, an untitled Star Wars feature is scheduled to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
In another exciting development, Ubisoft and Disney are set to launch their next Star Wars game in 2024, adding to the anticipation and enthusiasm of fans.
This announcement marks a potential turning point for Lucasfilm, which has faced challenges in defining the future of ‘Star Wars’ on the big screen. The studio has grappled with multiple projects that never materialized, but with the unveiling of plans at Star Wars Celebration in London last year, including Ridley’s project and a film directed by Filoni, it seems the galaxy far, far away is poised for a cinematic revival.
