In a significant update from the makers, the highly-anticipated “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is now set to hit theaters a week earlier than originally scheduled, moving from March 29 to March 22, 2024. This strategic decision aims to maximize viewership during the spring break, setting the stage for an exciting box office showdown with other eagerly awaited titles.
The upcoming installment in the iconic Ghostbusters franchise, “Frozen Empire,” is poised to be a cinematic spectacle, screening in IMAX and premium large formats. The storyline takes a nostalgic turn as the Spengler family reunites at the legendary New York City firehouse, joining forces with the original Ghostbusters.
This seasoned team has been diligently working on a covert research lab to enhance their ghost-busting endeavors. However, a discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes a malevolent force, compelling both the old and new Ghostbusters to unite, protect their home, and thwart a looming global catastrophe—an impending second Ice Age.
Drawing inspiration from Ivan Reitman’s 1984 classic Ghostbusters, penned by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, “Frozen Empire” serves as the fifth film in the revered series, following the success of 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which raked in over $204 million worldwide. “Afterlife” explores the story of Callie Spengler (played by Coon), a single mother whose connection to the original Ghostbusters team unravels amidst mysterious supernatural occurrences, unveiling her estranged father’s legacy.
Returning to the franchise alongside Coon in “Frozen Empire” are esteemed cast members including Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts. The sequel also welcomes new additions to the star-studded ensemble with actors Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt.
