Renowned poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar recently disclosed the underlying reason for the dissolution of his first marriage with fellow screenwriter Honey Irani. Speaking to Mojo Story, Akhtar candidly admitted that his battle with alcoholism played a significant role in the breakdown of their relationship. Reflecting on the past, he expressed regret, suggesting that had he been more responsible and sober, their marriage might have endured. Despite the separation, Akhtar maintained admiration for Irani, emphasizing their amicable co-parenting relationship and ongoing friendship.
Photographs from their granddaughter Shakya Akhtar’s graduation ceremony at Lanchester University, UK, captured Akhtar and Irani together, alongside Akhtar’s current wife, actor Shabana Azmi. The unity displayed extended to significant family events, such as the wedding of their son, actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, to actor Shibani Dandekar.
Akhtar and Irani tied the knot in 1972 and share two children, Farhan Akhtar and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar. Despite divorcing in 1984, they continue to co-parent their children. Following their divorce, Akhtar married Shabana Azmi.
In the interview, Akhtar acknowledged Irani’s tolerance of his drinking habit for nearly a decade into their marriage, jesting that she ultimately wed someone who was a heavy drinker. However, he revealed his decision to quit alcohol entirely, a resolution he has steadfastly upheld since.
Amidst his personal revelations, Akhtar’s professional endeavors continue to thrive. He recently penned the lyrics for the song ‘Nikle The Kabhi Hum Ghar Se’ in Rajkumar Hirani’s film ‘Dunki’ featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu. Currently, he is working on writing lyrics for the songs of ‘Lahore 1947.’
Additionally, Akhtar made headlines as he testified in a defamation case filed by him against Kangana Ranaut. Ranaut’s remarks prompted a response from Akhtar, who expressed dismay over her comments regarding his career.
