Mexican singer and actor Adan Canto, renowned for his roles in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Agent Game,” and the TV series “The Cleaning Lady,” has passed away at the age of 42. Publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed to The Associated Press that Canto succumbed to appendiceal cancer, a battle he chose to keep private.
In a statement, Allen expressed, “Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew. Those who glimpsed it were changed forever. He will be greatly missed by so many.”
Born in Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico, and raised in Texas, Canto initiated his career as a singer-songwriter in Mexico City at the age of 16. His acting journey began with his debut on the 2009 Mexican series “Estado de Gracia,” and he later made his American debut on Kevin Williamson’s 2013 Fox drama series “The Following.”
Canto’s notable roles include Vice President-elect Aaron Shore on “Designated Survivor,” Colombian politician Rodrigo Lara Bonilla on “Narcos,” and the mutant Sunspot in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” He starred in Halle Berry’s directorial debut, “Bruised,” as well as “Agent Game.” Additionally, Canto directed two short films, one in 2014 and another in 2020, the latter being a provocative western starring Theo Rossi.
At the time of his passing, Canto was portraying Armand Morales on Fox’s “The Cleaning Lady,” currently filming its third season. Despite being unable to participate in the production due to his illness, he had hoped to rejoin later in the season.
Adan Canto’s warmth and talent were acknowledged by his colleagues, with actor Kiefer Sutherland, his co-star on “Designated Survivor,” sharing a tribute on Instagram. “He was such a wonderful spirit,” wrote Sutherland. “As an actor, his desire to do well, to be great, and then do better, was truly impressive, and he will be greatly missed.”
Canto is survived by his wife Stephanie Ann Canto and their two children, Roman Alder, aged 3, and 18-month-old Eve Josephine. May Adan Canto rest in peace.
