Directed by debutant Liju Thomaz, the film offers a grounded portrayal of societal expectations and family dynamics, presenting itself as a watchable, albeit unremarkable, addition to the genre. Yet, amidst the wave of blood-soaked thrillers and avant-garde narratives, this straightforward tale of ordinary lives feels like a breath of fresh air.
The story follows Nakulan (Arjun Ashokan) and Shalini (Anagha Narayanan), a newlywed couple navigating early marital pressures. Shalini, in particular, struggles under the weight of societal questions about “good news.” The narrative takes a dramatic turn when she retaliates against a nosy aunt, bringing her frustrations to a boiling point.
What sets Anpodu Kanmani apart is its nuanced exploration of Shalini’s psyche, capturing her journey through love, frustration, and self-expression. Anagha Narayanan is the heart of the film, delivering an understated yet powerful performance.
