Director Susanna White delves into the intricacies of bringing Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel, “The Buccaneers,” to life in an upcoming Apple TV+ series. White, well-versed in the period drama genre, likens the adaptation process to having one’s cake and eating it too.
Featuring a talented cast including Kristine Froseth, Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Aubri Ibrag, Mia Threapleton, and Christina Hendricks, the initial three episodes of “The Buccaneers” are set to premiere on November 8. Notably, this isn’t the first screen adaptation of Wharton’s work; in 1995, Carla Gugino took on the role of Annabel “Nan” St. George in a BBC-produced miniseries. However, the show faced criticism for its interpretations, sparking discussions about providing a more comprehensive narrative for Wharton’s characters.
