In a remarkable two-week run, the recently released Hindi film ‘Animal’ has notched up an impressive box office collection, surpassing Rs 650 crore. Helmed by director Sandeep Vanga Reddy, the movie features Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna in pivotal roles. Despite its commercial success, ‘Animal’ has become the center of criticism due to its perceived misogynistic portrayal.
Cinematographer Siddhartha Nuni took to social media to share his thoughts on the film, deeming it “triggering.” Via an Instagram story, Nuni expressed his discomfort with the movie’s content, highlighting elements such as Nazi glorification, justification of toxic masculinity, unrestrained violence, depictions of marital rape, and abusive relationships. He particularly called out the last scene featuring Ranbir Kapoor’s character, describing it as “beyond redemption” and “abusive to the audience’s minds.”
Nuni raised concerns about the film’s impact on young audiences, noting instances of children present in the audience during screenings at a popular multiplex in Hyderabad. He questioned the absence of censorship and the responsibility to shield young minds from explicit content in an A-rated film.
‘Animal’ boasts a star-studded cast, including Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol. The narrative revolves around a man seeking approval from his father, contributing to the film’s gripping storyline and widespread success. The controversy surrounding its content, however, prompts a broader discussion about the societal reflections portrayed in cinema and the need for responsible filmmaking.
