Renowned director Sangeeth Sivan, celebrated for his contributions to both Malayalam and Hindi cinema, passed away at the age of 65 after suffering a cardiac arrest. His brother and cinematographer, Santosh Sivan, confirmed the news of his demise via a WhatsApp message to PTI.
Sangeeth Sivan was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he breathed his last following a cardiac arrest. His last rites are scheduled to take place on Thursday at Oshiwara cemetery at 4 pm.
Born into a family of filmmakers, Sangeeth made his directorial debut with the Malayalam film “Vyooham” in 1990, starring Raghuvaran and Urvashi. He gained prominence down south with hits like “Yoddha” (1992), featuring Mohanlal, and ventured into Hindi cinema with “Zor” in 1998, starring Sunny Deol and Sushmita Sen.
Throughout his career, Sangeeth helmed various successful projects including “Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne”, “Ek – The Power of One”, and “Yamla Pagla Deewana 2”.
Condolences poured in from the film fraternity, with actors Sunny Deol, Riteish Deshmukh, and Tusshar Kapoor expressing their shock and grief over his demise. Sunny Deol, who collaborated with Sangeeth on multiple projects, remembered him fondly and paid tribute to their friendship.
Riteish Deshmukh, who shared screen space with Sangeeth in comedies like “Kya Kool Hai Hum” and “Apna Sapna Money Money”, hailed him as a mentor and a wonderful human being.
Tusshar Kapoor, who also worked closely with Sangeeth, expressed his sorrow and remembered him as a mentor who introduced him to comedy.
Sangeeth’s diverse contributions to the entertainment industry also extended to web series, as he directed the 2019 series “Bhram”, starring Kalki Koechlin. His absence leaves a void in both Malayalam and Hindi cinema, with his legacy remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
