Malaikottai Vaaliban, directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and featuring Megastar Mohanlal, premiered in theaters on January 25 amid initial negative reviews and criticism. The film, however, managed to gain traction over time, overcoming the early challenges it faced.
Producer Shibu Baby John addressed the divisive reviewing culture prevalent among audiences and fans, emphasizing that while disliking a movie is acceptable, orchestrated hate campaigns against films pose a significant threat to the entire film industry.
Speaking to Manorama, John highlighted the strong friendship between Mammootty and Mohanlal but expressed disappointment in fans who engage in detrimental activities under the guise of loyalty, referring to them as “fools.” He revealed that director Lijo is grappling with the mental toll of the ongoing negativity surrounding the film.
Drawing parallels between political and cinematic experiences, John noted the similarities in personal attacks and the unsettling trend in the film industry. He acknowledged the right to express opinions through reviews but underscored the importance of distinguishing between constructive critique and attempts to undermine a movie.
Danish Sait, a part of the Malaikottai Vaaliban team, expressed his privilege in working with them, emphasizing that the overall experience outweighs any challenges faced.
John commented on the contrasting reactions of Mammootty and Mohanlal fans to their respective films. While Mammootty’s fans embrace his experimentation, Mohanlal’s supporters often criticize him for deviating from familiar roles, creating a competitive dynamic within the fanbase.
Lijo, in a previous press meet, shared his disappointment regarding the spread of negativity around the movie.
Despite the initial challenges, Malaikottai Vaaliban received acclaim from actors and directors, with Anurag Kashyap recently praising Lijo for his exceptional craftsmanship.
