In a surprising turn of events, Disney has thrilled Moana fans with the announcement of a sequel to the 2016 animated blockbuster, complete with a release date and a captivating first-look teaser clip. Initially planned as a web series, the decision to create a second feature film has ignited excitement among enthusiasts of the popular franchise.
The teaser clip, revealed by the studio, offers a sneak peek into Moana’s new maritime adventures, hinting at a continuation of the storyline from the original film. Although Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s character, Maui, was not featured in the clip, an enchanting still released by Disney depicts the Demigod on Moana’s boat, accompanied by her loyal pet pig and pet chicken, observing a majestic whale.
The much-anticipated sequel is set to hit theaters on November 27, 2024, as confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger during an official announcement on Wednesday. Iger expressed the studio’s eagerness to provide fans with more of Moana and Maui’s captivating journey.
The upcoming film is poised to take audiences on a new epic voyage, reintroducing beloved characters Moana and Maui, along with a fresh crew of adventurers. Reports suggest that the storyline will follow Moana as she embarks on a perilous journey into the uncharted waters of Oceania, spurred by an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors.
While not officially confirmed, it is strongly suggested that Auli’i Cravalho will reprise her role as Moana in the sequel. Adding to the anticipation, the film will feature new musical compositions by the talented duo of Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, alongside Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina.
In addition to the sequel, Disney has unveiled plans for a live-action adaptation of Moana, slated for release in 2025, promising fans a double dose of enchantment from the beloved franchise.
