Renowned British rapper Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Owuo Jr., faced a driving ban of nine months on Thursday after admitting to using his phone while driving his Rolls-Royce through London.
The 31-year-old artist, celebrated for propelling the grime genre into the commercial spotlight, was dealt the verdict at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court. Stormzy, who gained widespread acclaim with his debut album “Gang Signs and Prayer,” which won the Album of the Year at the Brit Awards in 2018, has been previously recognized as the Best Male British Solo Artist, an award he claimed again in 2020.
However, his record behind the wheel has raised concerns, as highlighted by District Judge Andrew Sweet during the court proceedings. Judge Sweet criticized Stormzy’s actions as “dangerous and irresponsible,” emphasizing the potential risks posed to other road users.
The court was informed that the rapper had previously endangered “vulnerable road users” when driving a Lamborghini Urus featuring illegally tinted windows. Prosecutor Alice Holloway revealed that the tints allowed only 4% light transmission, significantly below the legal requirement of 70%. Stormzy’s driving ban adds to the scrutiny surrounding the artist, who is celebrated for his musical contributions but has faced legal challenges related to his road conduct.
As fans and followers await his next move, the incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with fame and the importance of safe driving practices.
