Julia Butters is in negotiations to join the cast of Disney’s sequel to the 2003 hit film “Freaky Friday.” While Disney has yet to confirm any casting details, insiders suggest that original stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are also in discussions to reprise their roles. Nisha Ganatra, known for directing “Late Night,” is set to direct the upcoming sequel.
Despite inquiries, Disney and representatives for Butters have not provided comments regarding her involvement. The plot for the new film remains under wraps, but the screenplay has been penned by Jordan Weiss. The production team will include Andrew Gunn, who produced the original movie, and Kristin Burr. It is still undecided whether the film will be released in theaters or on Disney’s streaming platform.
The 2003 “Freaky Friday” tells the story of Tess Coleman (Curtis), an overworked single mother, and her rebellious teenage daughter, Anna (Lohan). Their strained relationship takes a fantastical turn when a fortune cookie causes them to swap bodies, forcing them to experience life from each other’s perspective. The film was a modern adaptation of Mary Rodgers’ children’s novel of the same name and had been previously made into a movie in 1976, featuring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster.
The update on the sequel was initially reported by The InSneider Newsletter.
