Renowned filmmaker Mike Flanagan, known for works such as “The Life of Chuck,” is reportedly in discussions to helm the next installment of the “Exorcist” franchise under Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, according to sources confirmed by Deadline.
Following David Gordon Green’s departure from the rebooted series earlier this year, Flanagan’s potential involvement marks a significant development in the franchise’s direction. Universal and Blumhouse secured the rights to “The Exorcist” from Morgan Creek in July 2021 for a substantial $400 million. Initially planned as a trilogy, the future trajectory of the series remains uncertain, pending Flanagan’s agreement.
The first film in the reboot, “The Exorcist: Believer,” starring Leslie Odom Jr. and Ellen Burstyn, fell short of expectations upon its release in October, earning $26.4 million domestically and $136.2 million worldwide.
Originally slated for an April 18, 2025 release, the sequel, “The Exorcist: Deceiver,” was postponed following Green’s departure. In its place, Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael,” took the slot. Green, meanwhile, has moved on to direct “Nutcrackers” and is returning to HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones.”
Flanagan, fresh off the success of “The Life of Chuck,” has a notable portfolio, including adaptations of Stephen King’s works such as “Doctor Sleep” and “Gerald’s Game,” as well as original features like “Ouija: Origin of Evil” and “Oculus.” Additionally, his television projects, including “The Haunting” series and “The Midnight Club,” have garnered acclaim. He co-owns Intrepid Pictures with Trevor Macy.
