In a noteworthy prelude to the celebrated wedding of Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan on October 25, 1991, the couple faced significant familial opposition, particularly from Gauri’s orthodox Hindu family. The reservations stemmed from concerns about their daughter marrying a Muslim, casting doubt on Shah Rukh Khan’s intentions and suggesting he might be taking advantage of their “naive” daughter.
Gauri’s brother, Vikrant Chibber, played a central role in expressing vehement disapproval, even going so far as to harbor intense negative feelings, revealing a desire to “murder” Shah Rukh Khan every time their paths crossed. In a candid interview with Filmfare, Gauri disclosed that Vikrant, typically a laid-back individual, would visibly flush with anger each time he encountered Shah Rukh. She described her brother as fiercely possessive and admitted that he harbored thoughts of violence whenever he caught Shah Rukh looking at her.
Despite being only a year and a half older than Gauri, Vikrant went to extreme lengths, issuing threats of physical harm to Shah Rukh Khan if spotted near his sister. Remarkably, Shah Rukh Khan, recognizing Vikrant’s protective stance as that of a concerned brother, refrained from responding to the aggressive threats. In the face of Vikrant’s declarations such as, ‘I’ll beat you to pulp, I’ll bash you up,’ Shah Rukh maintained a calm demeanor, simply nodding and responding with, ‘Yeah, yeah, whatever you say.’
Gauri underscored the familial double standards, recounting instances where her brother was permitted to date a girl when he was in the 12th standard, while she was explicitly prohibited from expressing interest in a boy during her 9th standard. The irony lay in the fact that both Gauri and Vikrant commenced their respective relationships in the same year and month, with Vikrant taking four years to reconcile with Gauri’s relationship with Shah Rukh.
