Renowned actress Nirmal Rishi and veteran theater stalwart Pran Sabharwal have been conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri awards in recognition of their exceptional contributions to Punjabi cinema and theater. Nirmal Rishi, a stalwart in the Punjabi entertainment industry for six decades, received the accolade at the age of 80, highlighting her enduring commitment to the art of acting.
In a similar vein, Pran Sabharwal, a 93-year-old theater veteran based in Patiala, was honored for his remarkable career spanning over seven decades and more than 5,000 performances. Despite lacking formal training, Sabharwal carved his niche in theater and radio, becoming a significant figure in the theatrical landscape.
Expressing his joy at the acknowledgment, Sabharwal recalled an encounter with legendary actor Prithviraj Kapoor in 1952, whose advice to pursue acting in Punjabi became the guiding force in his illustrious career. The acknowledgment of their work and dedication through the Padma Shri award was a moment of pride for both recipients.
The esteemed award not only recognizes their individual achievements but also celebrates their collective contribution to Punjab’s vibrant artistic and cultural heritage. Nirmal Rishi and Pran Sabharwal, having worked together in the play ‘Paisa Bolta Hai,’ share a bond of mutual respect and pride in receiving the Padma Shri honor.
