In a tragic turn of events, Bhavatharini, the accomplished singer and daughter of renowned music composer Ilaiyaraaja, succumbed to her battle with cancer on the evening of January 25th, at approximately 5:20 pm in Sri Lanka. The 2000 National Film Award-winning artist had been undergoing medical treatment in Sri Lanka for health issues, initially diagnosed as gall bladder stones but later confirmed to be in the advanced stages of stomach cancer.
Ilaiyaraaja, the legendary musician, is currently in Sri Lanka for a scheduled concert this weekend. The family is making arrangements to bring Bhavatharini’s mortal remains back to Chennai from Sri Lanka for her final rites.
Bhavatharini, known for her exceptional singing and music composition skills, received critical acclaim for her rendition of the song “Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu” from the film Bharathi, composed by her father. Her debut as a singer in Tamil cinema was marked by the popular song ‘Masthana Masthana’ in the Prabhudeva-starrer ‘Raasaiyya.’ Additionally, she ventured into music direction for films like Mitr, My Friend (2002) and Phir Milenge, directed by Revathy. The news of her untimely demise has left the music and film industry in mourning.
