A trial is set to begin in the western United States for Hannah Gutierrez, the armorer responsible for the firearms on the set of the Alec Baldwin movie “Rust,” where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot during filming in 2021. Gutierrez, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges, faces allegations of negligence in handling firearms, including allowing live rounds to be mixed with blank ammunition. Prosecutors also claim Gutierrez was under the influence of drugs during the incident and tampered with evidence afterward.
The trial, beginning with jury selection, is expected to last approximately two weeks. If convicted, Gutierrez could face up to 18 months in prison. This trial represents one of the attempts to hold individuals accountable for the tragedy that prompted discussions about safety protocols in the film industry.
Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin, who was holding the gun that discharged the fatal shot, faces involuntary manslaughter charges. Baldwin maintains that he did not pull the trigger and has emphasized the responsibility of professionals on set to ensure safety. His trial date is yet to be scheduled.
“Rust” production was halted following the incident but resumed later, with efforts to complete the film in honor of Hutchins’ memory. The movie’s director, Joel Souza, returned to finish the project, expressing a bittersweet sentiment about completing the work started by him and Hutchins.
Matthew Hutchins, Halyna’s widower, has settled a wrongful death suit with “Rust” producers and served as an executive producer on the film. Baldwin, who remains free on bail, continues to navigate the legal process amidst ongoing scrutiny surrounding the tragic event.
