In a highly anticipated collaboration, renowned Hollywood director Spike Lee and celebrated actor Denzel Washington are teaming up once again for the English-language remake of Akira Kurosawa’s classic ‘High and Low’. The production, slated to commence in March, marks the duo’s latest venture since their collaboration on Lee’s 2006 film ‘Inside Man’. Lee will be directing the film, working from a script co-written with Alan Fox.
Originally released in 1963, ‘High and Low’, loosely based on Ed McBain’s novel ‘King’s Ransom’, follows the story of Kingo Gondo, portrayed by Toshiro Mifune, a wealthy individual who plunges into debt in a daring attempt to orchestrate a hostile takeover. The plot takes a twist when Gondo becomes the target of kidnappers.
Lee and Washington’s cinematic partnership dates back to 1990 with ‘Mo’ Better Blues’, and their collaboration has flourished with notable films such as ‘Malcolm X’ (1992), ‘He Got Game’ (1998), and ‘Inside Man’. The upcoming remake promises to bring a fresh perspective to Kurosawa’s timeless narrative, blending Lee’s distinct directorial style with Washington’s compelling on-screen presence. Fans and film enthusiasts alike eagerly await the duo’s reunion on the set of this iconic project.
