In a recent development, Surya Sethupathi, son of renowned actor Vijay Sethupathi, has embarked on his acting journey, taking the lead role in the upcoming action sports drama “Phoenix.” The film, directed by stunt choreographer Anal Arasu, who is making his directorial debut, is also produced by Arasu.
The project was officially kickstarted with a traditional pooja ceremony, featuring Surya Sethupathi, Abi Nakshathra from ‘Ayali,’ and Varsha in the female lead roles, alongside Vignesh of ‘Kaaka Muttai’ fame in a pivotal role.
Described as an action sports drama, the film’s concept revolves around the main character embodying the traits of a phoenix bird, rising from the ashes with each demise, as explained by the director.
Anal Arasu shared insights into casting Surya, revealing that he discovered the budding actor’s talent while he was training in boxing. The director expressed his conviction that Surya’s skills made him an ideal fit for the role in the film.
When questioned about following in his father’s footsteps, Surya responded by stating, “I decided not to come in my father’s shadows. So it was the director who found me and offered the role.”
Notably, the film marks Surya Sethupathi’s official debut as a lead actor, as opposed to his earlier appearances in ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan,’ where he played a brief role and portrayed the younger version of Vijay Sethupathi, as well as his supporting role in ‘Junga,’ alongside his father.
In preparation for his role, Surya dedicated six months to training for the film’s demanding action sequences. The director emphasized the unique identity of Surya in the industry by introducing him as ‘Surya’ rather than ‘Surya Vijay Sethupathi.’
Reflecting on his father’s perspective, Surya shared, “Appa vera na vera (He is different, I am different). That’s why the makers have put ‘Introducing Surya’ and not ‘Introducing Surya Vijay Sethupathi.’ Both Appa and amma were happy about me acting as a hero.”
As anticipation builds for “Phoenix,” it is evident that Surya Sethupathi is ready to carve his own niche in the world of cinema.
