In a recent development, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie’s eldest daughter, Zahara, has reportedly distanced herself from her adopted father, Brad Pitt, by no longer using his surname. The 18-year-old, currently enrolled in college, now goes by Zahara Marley Jolie instead of her previous Jolie-Pitt moniker, as per reports from Mirror.co.uk.
Zahara, who recently joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Spelman College, seems to have made the change official during her college registration. Instead of registering under Jolie-Pitt, she opted for Jolie, suggesting a deliberate move to detach from her adoptive father’s surname.
Adopted by Jolie and Pitt from an Ethiopian orphanage in Addis Ababa in 2005 at the age of six months, Zahara is the second of the couple’s six children, joining siblings Maddox, Shiloh, Pax, and twins Knox and Vivienne.
Currently in her sophomore year at college, Zahara expressed her identity during a sorority induction video, stating, “My name is Zahara Marley Jolie. And (I) landed all the way from the Golden State in the city full of angels: Los Angeles, California.”
Social media users were quick to notice Zahara’s choice of surname, with one Twitter user commenting, “I wasn’t gonna say anything, but I definitely peeped that Zahara left Pitt off her last name.” Another wrote, “Oh Zahara said her last name is Jolie, not Jolie-Pitt,” and a third emphasized the need to respect her as an individual, stating, “I need people to respect her as an individual who just said her name out loud ZAHARA. MARLEY. JOLIE. Zero mention of the name PITT. Period.”
This development comes amidst Angelina Jolie’s ongoing journey of healing following her split from Brad Pitt in 2016, just two years after their marriage.
