In a recent interview at the Los Angeles premiere of her Netflix series ‘The Brothers Sun,’ acclaimed actress Michelle Yeoh expressed her reluctance for her newborn grandson, Maxime, to witness her upcoming role in the film ‘Wicked.’ When asked which of her films she would want her grandson to see first, Yeoh initially considered ‘Wicked,’ where she portrays the character Madame Morrible, a school headmistress and a witch. However, she ultimately decided against it, stating her concern about Maxime perceiving her as a villain.
“I was thinking, I’ve done a musical, ‘Wicked.’ … I play a witch,” Yeoh remarked, alluding to Madame Morrible’s negative character traits. She expressed her desire for her grandson not to view her in such a light, pondering what film would be suitable for him without causing any distress. Yeoh humorously acknowledged the challenge of witnessing her singing in the film and quipped, “I say, ‘Good luck to you all.'”
The upcoming two-part ‘Wicked’ adaptation, directed by Jon M. Chu, is based on the Broadway musical and explores the backstory of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo. The narrative delves into Elphaba’s complex relationship with her classmate Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, who later becomes Glinda the Good. Yeoh’s character, Madame Morrible, serves as the corrupt headmistress at Shiz University, contributing singing parts in popular songs from the musical.
The discussion about ‘Wicked’ was part of the event where Yeoh also promoted her role as Mama Sun in the newly released Netflix action comedy series ‘The Brothers Sun.’ In the series, Yeoh plays the mother of the Sun brothers, Charles (Justin Chien) and Bruce (Sam Song Li), who become entangled in a plot involving their father, a Taiwanese triad leader. Charles travels to Los Angeles to protect his family, only to discover that trouble has followed them from Taiwan, and his mother holds more knowledge than initially revealed.
