In a poignant flashback, Mollywood’s versatile actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, known for his exceptional performances, was revealed to be not only a brilliant artist but also a person of strong principles and values. A video from the funeral of his legendary father, Sukumaran, who passed away on June 16, 1997, showcased a significant moment as a 15-year-old Prithviraj, alongside his brother Indrajith Sukumaran, stood stoically during the procession.
The emotional episode was revisited during the promotion of the movie ‘Louis,’ where actor Manoj K Jayan provided insights into the incident. He shared, “At his dad Sukumaran’s funeral, a video captures Indrajith being his normal self, offering greetings to those attending. In stark contrast, a young Prithviraj appears stiff, holding his hands firmly, seemingly indifferent, adorned with spectacles. Inquiring about this years later during the shooting of the romantic film ‘My Story,’ I posed the question to Prithviraj, and he provided a fitting response.”
Prithviraj, shedding light on the reason behind his demeanor, explained, “Did you notice that during my father’s funeral, whenever big actors such as Mohanlal or Mammootty came, the audiences were simply hooting and cheering for them, not minding the fact that my father is lying dead there. I was infuriated by this response, and that’s precisely why I stood solemnly that day, refraining from engaging with anyone.”
Meanwhile, Sukumaran, Prithviraj’s father, has left an indelible mark on the Malayalam film industry, breathing life into several memorable characters in films such as ‘Jagratha,’ ‘Kottayam Kunjachan,’ ‘Utharam,’ and many more.
