In a recent interview with Rajshri Unplugged, Deepika Deshpande Amin, known for her role as Shah Rukh Khan’s on-screen mother in the film “Fan,” shared nostalgic anecdotes about her experiences working with the Bollywood superstar almost two decades ago in Barry John’s theatre group.
Reflecting on Shah Rukh Khan’s vibrant presence in the theatre group, Deepika praised his enduring energy and enthusiasm. She recalled how, during late-night rehearsals, when the need for transportation arose, Shah Rukh, being one of the few with a car, took it upon himself to ensure the safe return of every girl to her home. Describing the gesture, Deepika said, “Shah Rukh and Rituraj were the two people who had cars, and they used to drop all the girls off at their respective homes. It felt like a transport vehicle, and everyone used to pile up.”
The actress fondly recounted the camaraderie among the theatre group members, emphasizing how Shah Rukh Khan, with his Maruti van, personally dropped each girl home after rehearsals. She added, “Everyone used to help each other. We used to all go and buy costumes together.”
Although Deepika and Shah Rukh Khan last shared the screen in the 2016 film “Fan,” where she portrayed his on-screen mother, she initially had reservations about the role due to their contemporaneous age. Assured by the makers that special effects and prosthetics would be utilized to make Shah Rukh appear younger, she embraced the character.
Currently, Shah Rukh Khan is involved in Rajkumar Hirani’s upcoming project “Dunki,” showcasing his continued commitment to diverse and compelling roles in the film industry. The actor’s enduring support and camaraderie with his colleagues, as recounted by Deepika Deshpande Amin, offer a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes dynamics of the Bollywood icon’s early years in the industry.
